About
The Netherlands produced one of modern design's founding objects when Gerrit Rietveld built a chair of plain slats and boards around 1918, later painted in De Stijl's primary colours. His Schröder House in Utrecht (1924) put the same planes and colours into a home. W. H. Gispen went on to make tubular steel furniture and lamps, and after the war Friso Kramer's Revolt chair (1953) paired a folded steel frame with a light seat.
In the 1990s graduates of the Design Academy Eindhoven and the Amsterdam label Droog treated design as commentary, using found materials, humour and deliberate roughness. Maarten Baas charred furniture for his Smoke series (2002), Hella Jongerius mixed industrial production with visible stitching and irregular glazes, and Jeroen Verhoeven's Cinderella Table (2005) stacked computer-cut plywood into a swelling profile. The Frisian pottery Royal Tichelaar Makkum has brought contemporary designers to its tin-glazed earthenware.
