About
Photographs have been altered almost since photography began. Oscar Rejlander combined some thirty negatives into the crowded allegory The Two Ways of Life (1857), and Soviet censors airbrushed purged officials out of group portraits. Digital tools made such changes seamless, shifting the question from whether an image was altered to how much.
Nancy Burson merged the faces of world leaders into computer composites in the early 1980s. Jeff Wall assembled A Sudden Gust of Wind (after Hokusai) (1993) from many separate exposures, and Andreas Gursky removed a factory and passers-by from the riverbank in Rhein II (1999) to leave pure horizontal bands. Aziz + Cucher smoothed away eyes and mouths in their Dystopia portraits of the mid-1990s. Painters use software too, distorting and recolouring source images before translating them into paint. Look for impossible continuity, too-perfect symmetry and light that falls from more than one direction.
