About
Natural resins such as amber, copal and shellac have long served as varnish, incense and carving material. Synthetic resins, including polyester and epoxy, arrived in the 20th century: poured as liquids and mixed with a hardener, they cure into solids that can be clear as glass or richly pigmented, and they take the shape of any mould.
In Southern California in the 1960s, resin was central to the polished Finish Fetish look. De Wain Valentine cast large polyester discs and columns, and Peter Alexander poured translucent, softly tinted wedges and cubes that seem to hold light. Eva Hesse valued fibreglass and latex in the late 1960s for their organic effects. Carole A. Feuerman has cast hyperreal swimmers in resin, and the designer Gaetano Pesce made chairs and vases from brightly coloured cast resin. Many resins yellow and degrade with age. Look for depth, trapped bubbles and glossy clarity.
