About
Handcraft covers work made mainly by hand or with hand-guided tools, from luxury cabinetmaking to rural pottery. In 1920s Paris, workshops such as Décoration Intérieure Moderne and designers like Paul Follot produced Art Deco furniture of carefully matched veneers, while Tiffany Studios cut and leaded glass shades piece by piece in New York. In the United States George Nakashima worked from individual boards of walnut, and Edward Moulthrop turned huge bowls from local timber.
Japan formalised respect for craft in 1950 with a law protecting intangible cultural heritage, which led to the designation of master makers popularly called Living National Treasures; the Bizen potter Isezaki Jun is among them. The silversmith Hiroshi Suzuki raises vessels from flat sheets with hammers, and Don Reitz explored salt and wood firing in American ceramics. Look for tool marks, slight irregularities, joinery cut by hand and the way decoration follows the grain or clay.
