Anonymous British street artist whose stencilled images comment on war, consumerism and authority.
Banksy emerged from the Bristol graffiti scene in the 1990s and has kept his identity private. He works mainly in stencil, which lets a detailed image go up on a wall in minutes: rats, policemen, children and chimpanzees, often with a slogan, placed so that the site becomes part of the point. Girl with Balloon first appeared on London's South Bank in 2002, and the Flower Thrower in Beit Sahour, near Bethlehem, in 2003.
Beyond walls he has staged larger projects, among them the temporary theme park Dismaland (2015) in Weston-super-Mare and the Walled Off Hotel in Bethlehem (2017), and directed the film Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010). Banksy is a living artist and his work is in copyright, so none of it is offered here.
